What’s a blog—and why do I need one?

A blog is a small article, usually between 300 and 500 words, that is on a topic of your choosing. Many businesses use blogs to interact, entertain and inform their customers—but do they make fiscal sense?

Yes, they do.

No matter the industry you’re in, from web design to baking, there will always be new products or technology coming out, interesting topics to comment on—and even current events that may relate to your business.

Blogs can make a great addition to your website for the following reasons:

  1. Blogs provide searchable content to your website. More and more search engines are favouring websites with current content over those that have keywords, but stale content. The more often you blog, the more current your site is. If you are able to include keywords in your blog (which will come naturally if you’re writing about your industry) your site will garner more attention—and a higher ranking.
  2. Blogging helps stablish you as an expert. Instead of current and potential clients coming to your website just to check the price of a service or a product, they will come to your site to learn about the different products that you are offering, or a new technology that may come on-line soon. Just like social media, it’s about making you top of mind—and that in itself is another reason for blogging often, as people will remember you better.

How do you make blogging easier?

  1.  Set up an editorial schedule. Make blogging something you complete on Fridays, or at month-end. Stick to the schedule, and have fun!
  2. Hire a content writer. If you simply do not have the time to complete the writing, hire a content writer—they will be able to write the blogs based on your subjects, or can come to you with ideas of their own.

A blog is an investment in time, if not money, but can reap you huge returns. Interested?
